Recollections

I AM SO GRATEFUL for simpler times.
Stores were closed on Sundays,
TV shows seemed to make more sense,
Family members spent ample time with each other,
And people were valued more than things.

I AM SO GRATEFUL for the good old days.
Growing up in the era of front porch swings
And grandfathers who welcomed, "Fix it, please,"
One by one our troubles slipped away
As we listened to tall tales told for fun.

I AM SO GRATEFUL for pictures.
Videotaping children from their first step,
Taking posed snapshots before a high school prom,
Candid moments are developed instantly
And speak louder than words on a homemade greeting card.

I AM SO GRATEFUL for recalling childhood grins.
Chasing ice cream wagons down the street
Hooked by the piercing, popular jingle,
Welcoming a frenzied greeting from my dog
Who licked my face and jumped up and down.

I AM SO GRATEFUL for yesteryear.
A mother's love, a father's care,
A rocking horse, a baby chair,
The scent of clean clothes drying on the line,
An old rope swing for a child to climb.

I AM SO GRATEFUL for mouth-watering smells.
Granny's beans baking in the oven,
Bacon and eggs sizzling in a fry pan,
Chocolate fudge hot off the flame,
And pink bubble gum, aah so sweet!

I AM SO GRATEFUL for a trip down memory lane.
Musty hallways of days we knew,
Seize the moment of a nostalgic mood,
Old times and old scenes of smiles and tears,
Classmates reunite after many a year.

Stevenson: Soul work with the poets
Herald-Mail Media
The inherent and blessed slowness that summer provokes takes me to the deck each morning to read poetry and let the soul and psyche converse with the other. As the years advance and before I go the way of all the Earth, I keep saying to myself: “Be real!

American Life in Poetry: 'My Cousin, Milton'
The Spokesman-Review
In one of my recent columns, I wrote about the importance to the overall effect of a poem of having a strong ending, and here's a fine example of that. It's by Terri Kirby Erickson, a North Carolinian, from her book, “Becoming the Blue Heron ...

Athletes and poets both excel by losing themselves in the Zen zone
Press-Enterprise
Given the dumb jock, sensitive bard stereotypes of athletes and poets, it might not seem like the two have much in common, but sports and poetry have always felt intimately connected to me.The symmetry isn't physical, but metaphysical. They align ...

Simplicity, the Essence of Kedarnath Singh's Poetry
The Wire
However, it should not be assumed that Kedarnath Singh was a surrealist or mystic poet. On the contrary, he was plain and simple, both in life and in poetry. His poetry is essentially that of a common man – speaking in his language and dealing with his ...

But poetry is, and always has been, more than simply transportive. Poetry is inherently political, emotional, and spiritual. Reading a poem is a meaningful act, a form of listening to other's voices and experiences that resonates far deeper than the page.
